United We Stand: Part Two

Hello and welcome back to RFM Tales, our homage to the iPhone/Android football management sim Retro Football Management.

In our first save on the site, I (Dan Barker Gray) have taken the reins of Manchester United at the start of the 1988-89 season with the aim of landing a first league title since 1967. If you're new to the site then check out part one here: https://rfmtales.blogspot.com/2021/06/united-we-stand-part-one.html.

Let's get stuck into the action as our story resumes in September 1988...

The month gets underway with us leaving South East London with a point after Brian McClair rescues a draw from our trip to Charlton Athletic. The Scottish striker netted the equaliser twenty minutes from time after Rob Lee had given the home side a first-half lead.

With other results going in our favour, the draw sends us to the top of the league table for the first time this season.

West Ham United are the next to visit Old Trafford and are duly sent packing thanks to a 2-0 win for United.

Imre Varadi haunts one of his many former clubs when Sheffield Wednesday are hammered 4-0 with the ex-Owls striker grabbing a brace to begin his ascent to unlikely Stretford End cult hero status.

Despite leaving Old Trafford for Hillsborough earlier in the summer, Chris Turner's second spell at Sheffield Wednesday proves to be a short one as I manage to tempt him back to United to provide competition and cover for Jim Leighton who has been in fine form so far this season.

The month comes to an end with a largely uneventful goalless draw with Tottenham at White Hart Lane and I'm slightly disappointed we don't capitalise on the numerical advantage when Chris Hughton was given his marching orders.

The draw at Spurs means we end the month as we started it as September comes to a close with us top of the table, just a point clear of Arsenal.

The scene is set for the month of October to open with a titanic top-of-the-table clash at Highbury as George Graham's Gunners lay in wait.

That's your lot for this instalment, I'll be back on Wednesday with our adventures during October 1988.

Thanks for reading, remember to download the game from either the Apple App Store or Google Play Store and begin your own historical footballing adventures.
